Diagnosis of Uterine Cancer

Understanding the Diagnosis of Uterine Cancer

The diagnosis of uterine cancer is crucial for detecting the disease at an early stage and improving treatment outcomes. It typically begins when a person notices symptoms like abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or unusual discharge and consults a doctor. Since these signs can be linked to other conditions, a thorough medical evaluation is necessary to determine the cause. Identifying uterine cancer early allows for more effective treatment, highlighting the importance of awareness and timely medical attention.

What are the Diagnosis of Uterine Cancer?

These are the tests your doctor will conduct to find out whether you have uterine cancer:

  • The doctor may do a physical exam to find out whether there is swelling in the abdomen.
  • Next, there can be a pelvic ultrasound to get an image of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.
  • The doctor may suggest a transvaginal ultrasound. In this ultrasound, the transducer is put into the vagina to see if the uterus contains a tumor or if the endometrium is thicker than usual.
  • They may also suggest endometrial biopsy. In this test, a small amount of tissue is removed for examination under a microscope. Though other tests can also suggest if the cancer is present, a biopsy is the only definite diagnosis.
  • The doctor may prescribe dilation and curettage. In this process, a sample from the uterus is removed to check for cancer cells, endometrial hyperplasia, and other conditions.
  • You may also need a CT scan. It takes pictures of the body using X-rays from different angles that show any abnormalities or tumors.
  • MRI is used in women with low-grade uterine cancer to see how far the cancer has grown into the uterus wall.
  • The doctors may use hysteroscopy and a biopsy to get a better view of the inside lining of the uterus. During the procedure, tissue can also be removed (biopsy) and sent for testing.

Why Early Detection of Uterine Cancer Matters?

Early detection is critical when it comes to uterine cancer. Like other cancer types, the earlier it’s detected, the more curable it becomes.

Here are several reasons why early detection is crucial:

When uterine cancer is caught in its early stages, more treatment options are available. Surgery, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy can be highly effective.

The five-year survival rate for localized uterine cancer is around 81%, whereas the rate drops to 68% for cancer that has spread to nearby tissues and lymph nodes.

Advanced uterine cancer can lead to severe complications, such as bladder and bowel problems. Early detection helps minimize these risks.

In some cases, early-stage uterine cancer treatment may allow for the preservation of fertility.
